Hotel Greening Project

The Hotel Greening Project has been conceived with Bureau Veritas and TUROB (Touristic Hotels & Investors Association) to move the environmental agenda forward in a small group of Istanbul hotels which are being used to accommodate 5th World Water Forum participants. This pilot project targets Forum hotels to raise awareness on hotel greening techniques and to allow participating hotels take the first step toward greener accommodations. Twenty-two hotels are voluntarily participating in the Hotel Greening Project.

A set of introductory meetings with hotels explained the concept of hotel greening and the methodology of the project itself. Following this, a more in-depth workshop was held covering ideas for greening specific areas of hotels and a description of the audit process which will be used to accurately measure the environmental performance level of the participating hotels. The audit will measure energy efficiency, water conservation, waste management practices, among other criteria.

An audit and evaluation of the participating hotels has been achieved. Hotels attaining a minimum standard will receive a certificate from Bureau Veritas and the GFI. Top performers in specific star categories will receive the "Green Steps Award", which are planned to be presented during the Forum Week in March 2009.

Green Steps Award Ceremony - 20 March, 2009

The Green Forum Initiative has worked to reduce the impact of the 5th World Water Forum on Istanbul and its environment. There have been many projects which reduce waste such as our reusable water bottle and USB memory stick and maximising the recycling of waste with our partners ISTAÇ and Yüceler.

The Turkish Ministry of Environment and Forestry is planting one tree for each Forum participant to help offset carbon dioxide emissions. The Hotel Greening Project worked with 22 hotels to find ways to reduce their environmental impact. On 20 March at the Secretariat Stand, awards were given to those which performed best according to a checklist prepared by Bureau Veritas.
